Birdseye Man Sentenced After Conviction for Possession of Methamphetamine

Birdseye, Indiana (May 21, 2021) – A Birdseye man, Steven L. Mundy, 60, was convicted by jury trial on April 9, 2021 in Dubois County Circuit Court of Possession of Methamphetamine as a Level 4 Felony and Resisting Law Enforcement as a Level 6 Felony. He was sentenced in Dubois County Circuit Court on Monday, May 4, 2021.

The case began on October 5, 2018, at approximately 7:30pm when officers from the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department attempted to serve an arrest warrant for Steven Mundy at his Birdseye residence. When officers knocked, they observed several broken objects inside the home and noted an appearance of a struggle, however, no one answered the door.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Deputies Clint Gogel, Donna Hurt and Trooper Nathaniel Kern went into the town of Birdseye to search for Mundy. Trooper Kurtis Blunk, Trooper McBeth, and Deputy Jesus Monarrez remained parked at the end of the driveway to the residence with headlights off.

At approximately 8:25pm, a vehicle proceeded up the driveway. When police turned their headlights on, the vehicle stopped and went into reverse at a high speed. Then the vehicle quickly turned around and departed the area. Police noted the vehicle was a green Dodge pickup truck, the same type of vehicle alleged to belong to Mundy. Police pursued the pickup truck with emergency lights and sirens initiated. The suspect truck continued southbound on State Road 145 at a rate of 50-60mph and then turned West onto County Road 900 South, nearly colliding with a bridge. As the pursuit continued, the vehicle would travel in the opposite lane of travel and would run off the road. Police also observed the driver of the vehicle extend his arm outside the driver’s side window and throw 3-4 white items out as he continued to flee.

Police placed stop sticks at the intersection of State Roads 145 and 62, and the suspect truck came into contact. The stop sticks caused the vehicle tires to lose air, but the truck continued for another three miles before ultimately running on the rims with debris flying and the vehicle smoking before coming to a stop. Police then placed the driver, Steven Mundy, under arrest.

With Mundy in custody, Deputies proceeded to locate the items thrown out of the driver’s window during the pursuit. They located three plastic baggies containing a white crystalline substance that tested positive for methamphetamine, totaling approximately 16.9 grams.

Mundy was sentenced in Dubois Circuit Court on May 4, 2021 by Judge Nathan Verkamp. Prosecutors asked for Mundy to serve 6 years in the Indiana Department of Correction at sentencing. Judge Verkamp gave Mundy a total of 6 years with 4 years of the sentence being served on probation and 2 years on home detention.
