Abortion Advocacy Groups Host Rallies in Southwestern Indiana
Local Sources- Friday morning the Supreme Court voted to overturn the Roe v. Wade in a new ruling in the case of Dobbs V Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
Last month, the nearly 50-year decision came into light after a leaked draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito seeking to overturn the decision. Alito, along with Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, voted in favor of overturning the ruling. Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett were nominated by former President Donald Trump, who is viewed as one of the most Pro-Life Presidents in history.
Opponents of the overturning were Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, who are considered the Liberal wing of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court’s decision sparked nationwide gatherings of abortion rights groups and supporters. Organized by MoveOn, Planned Parenthood, UltraViolet, and Women’s March, groups gathered in Bloomington, Evansville, and Bloomfield Friday night.
According to the Associated Press, President Joe Biden vowed to fight the new ruling.
So far, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wyoming have banned or heavily restricted abortions since the ruling was made. The states had “trigger bans” already in place prior to the ruling.
Trigger bans are bans that were set before the overturning of the Roe v. Wade. They were set to go into effect immediately after a ruling of overturning.
