“If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them”, Keeping Pets Safe this Winter
By: Corbin Lingenfelter, News Director
Local Sources- Cold temperatures can not only be harmful for pets, but also fatal.
Temperatures that reach a certain point can cause health problems in animals, from frostbite to death. With projected temperatures below zero forecasted Thursday and Friday, the Dubois County Humane Society (DCHS) wants to advise the community to be mindful of their pets and the temperature.
“My rule of thumb is if it’s too cold for you to stand outside in a coat, then it’s too cold for them,” said Shelby Wendholt, a vet tech with the Humane Society.
Wendholt says all animals, even those with long coats, are at risk of severe complications if left outside. She recommends bringing them indoors for the duration of the temperatures that are affected.
While Wendholt says there is not anything legally the Humane Society can do if you see an animal outside in the cold, she shared that you can call your local police department if you are within city limits and the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office if you live outside the city limits.
The Dubois County Humane Society has straw, igloo houses for feral cats (limited supply) and rentable crates for animals. Contact the Humane Society at 812-482-7387 or on Facebook for more information.
